Video is the fastest growing content segment on the Internet. And the reason is simple.  It’s producing amazing results. And for that reason, companies of all sizes, including the largest companies in the world are embracing and using online videos. They have become essential for a company’s success in today’s business environment.

Video engages viewers so much more than the written word can. It shows rather than tells, and can easily demonstrate products. Also, it connects with viewers and builds trust better. And simply, people, especially the younger demographics, rather watch a video than take the time and effort to read.

Research is revealing incredible results on the effectiveness of online video.

For example, well over 2 Billion videos are streamed daily. That’s more than if the entire population of China and North America streamed one video – everyday.

And as of 2011, YouTube is the number 2 search engine in the world behind Google. That means many millions of people are searching for information on video — rather than text. So if your company has videos about your products or services — or an informational video, maybe a how-to video, your chances of increasing website traffic multiply.

60% of all web traffic comes from online videos. So again,  if your video is on the Internet universe, people can link to  your website, driving more traffic to your site creating new revenue opportunities. In fact, A Kelsey Group study found that of the people who linked to a website by video, 24% made a purchase. Not bad!

Research also shows that e-commerce sites that use product videos sell more product.

For example, Zappos.com says it sells up to 30% more for products with videos than the ones with  just static pictures.  And that’s for products like shoes and clothes.  You’d think a still photograph would be enough.  However, put it on video and sales increased 30%.  Wow!

Video is a major component of Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, which is key in getting your website to appear on the first page of a search.

According to Forrester Reseach, video is 53 times more likely to drive a 1st page search result than traditional SEO.

We’ve all heard about the power and impact of social media.

People trust their friends and colleagues, so an attached video can be as powerful as word-of-mouth advertising on steroids — as well as go viral.

In the final analysis, online video is becoming an integral part of our everyday lives.

In the mid 90s, there were only a few companies that had a website.  Now days, a website is as common as a business card.  If you have a company, you have to have a website.  I believe the same type of evolution is happening with online video and rich media. Within a few years, it will be common, and even expected,  for company websites to have some type of video or rich media.
